Three of the 24 Miss SA contestants, namely Kelly Davids, Altina Vries and Aseza Matanzima, were disqualified for having visible tattoos, as this breaks one of the competition's long standing rules.

Davids has a tattoo on the back of her neck which is visible when her hair is up, Vries has a tattoo across the left shoulder blade and behind an ear, while Matanzima's tattoo runs across a rib and goes underneath her left arm. One of the stipulations for entering the pageant is that contestants must “not have any visible tattoos”.

They must also be South African citizens with a matric certificate or equivalent qualification, cannot be married or have had a marriage annulled, or be pregnant or have given birth. Of the 21 remaining contestants who will be vying for the crown at Sun City on March 29, seven are from the Western Cape, 11 from Gauteng, two from KwaZulu-Natal, and one from Mpumalanga.

Organisers said the contestants were “impressive”, and that many “have completed or are studying for

Although Matanzima had declared during her on-camera interview that she had a tattoo, she did not indicate that on her application form.

“The judging panel only intimately got to view the girls' tattoos last week when they did their bikini parade. This is when we for the first time as a judging panel got to see that video footage.”
