FIRST LADY OF MOTSWAKO

Refilwe Mooketsi better known to her fans and followers as “Fifi Cooper” hails from a small township in Mafikeng, in the North-West province. Ask anyone who is a motswako music lover and they will tell you that, whenever Miss Cooper performs, she steals the crowd’s attention and blew them away with her incredible performance. She was thrust into the spotlight in 2010, when her name was the buzzword, when she releases her single Chechella morao, causing a buzz in the local rap fraternity as a female rapper.Since then she has been fetured on national media such as HYPE MAGAZINE ,SOWETAN, to metion few.

When Motswako pioneer,HHP named her “ first lady of Hip Hop motswako” he did this because he saw how bitten Fifi was by a music bug at very young age. Her music journey is not an overnight story,she first caught by music fever when she was just eight years and by then her first musical interest was singing in a choir. She sang in many choirs in primary and high school. She however, was introduced to the music industry by her late dad who was a guitarist and keyboard player. Her memories with her dad playing together are still vivid “I used to be in a choir and me and my dad will rehears, while playing his guitar.”

Unfortunately his dad passes on, however that did not stop her from showcasing her god’s gifted talent. Since then she has been performing various music genre, varying from choral, gospel, and jazz music until she got bitten by motswako music bug. She was first featured on some of the well-known motswako pioneers such as Molemi on his Albums- Motzamai-Rebel Without A Pause and Asia Album , Khuli Chana’s Lost in Time and Lection’s GentleMansClub’

Miss Cooper is a lady of many vocations; she is a performer, singer, music writer, Latin and ballroom dancer, traditional dancer and a gymnastic .When asked where she learnt all these talents and skills she simply replied :

“Since from early age, every day after school, i attended arts and culture classes, in Mafikeng Mmabana Cultural Centre, where i learnt how to sing, dance, and polish my artistic talent”

Like many, after matriculated in Batswana Secondary, she went to seek for greener pastures in Gauteng, where she studied Media at Boston Media House in J-Sec. She, however, often went back home to perform at Xpressions, the youth development music show in Mafikeng which earned her fan base.

As a young female artist in a male dominated industry, she is faced with many challenges.

“It is very challenging industry, people always have ulterior motives. I have lost many who i thought they were my friends because i did not agree to their motives”, said Fifi.

What keep this single mother humble is her fans, son and her God Gifted talent.

When asked Miss Cooper what’s on her bucket list this year she describes 2015 as 20fifi.She says this year ,is a year of her life turning point, where she will be working with well-known heavy-weights motswako pioneers such as JR,KhuliChana,Notsi ,to name a few .
